We have always made the Billy goat a must hit up spot on our trips to Chicago. The original location is phenomenal and has so much character compared to the others. We recently took some friends of ours to it and they LOVED it. Great food, great vibes. The staff were awesome as usual but we came by for breakfast one morning and they were so kind in getting some merch for us and even gave us a plastic bag to put the original bag in since it started ripping. I will always highly recommend stopping here any time of day. Breakfast is great and the burgers are great. Just know that you can get burgers at breakfast time. So if you want a double cheeseburger with a sausage and egg, go for it!

Sometimes you just have to visit a classic, and the original Billy Goat Tavern absolutely lives up to its legendary reputation. The menu is simple and straightforward, focusing on what they do best. The burgers are fresh, flavorful, and perfectly executed, with the combination of seasoned beef, melted cheese, and a soft bun creating the kind of classic burger every burger place should strive for. If you're looking for an authentic Chicago burger at a great value, Billy Goat Tavern is an easy recommendation. The prices are reasonable, the quality is excellent, and the service is fast and friendly. The staff are kind, efficient, and keep everything moving without sacrificing hospitality. Between the iconic history, delicious burgers, and welcoming atmosphere, this is a place every burger lover should experience at least once.

The Billy Goat Tavern sits below Michigan Avenue in a subterranean tunnel between the upper and lower streets, and walking down to it for the first time has this slightly surreal quality, like finding a dive bar hidden inside one of the most polished stretches of the city. Newspapers line the walls, old sports photos everywhere, the counter guys behind the grill shouting orders back and forth in a way that became famous through a Saturday Night Live sketch and hasn't changed much since. The cheezborger is the order, and the system is simple: you walk up, they ask you what you want, and you tell them quickly because they don't have a lot of patience for deliberation. A beef patty griddled flat, a slice of American cheese melted on top, on a soft bun that holds everything together. No fries. No Pepsi. Chips. Coke. The limitations are part of the experience and make you feel like you're eating in a different era entirely. We got doubles for everyone, which is the move if you're actually hungry, and added a bag of chips on the side. The counter staff have exactly as much personality as advertised, gruff and fast and a little funny if you catch them right. Draft beer is cold and cheap. We sat at a table against the wall and watched the lunch rush come and go. It's not the best burger in Chicago. It's not trying to be. It's the Billy Goat, and that's a different category entirely.

It was fun to visit this place with so much history, but sad to say the food is really not all that good. Hamburger patties are paper thin and don't have much moisture. A double comes with two patties but only one cheese slice. The buns are thick and starchy. There are so many great hamburger places, but sadly I have to say this isn't one of them.

We needed a spot for a quick dinner after a river cruise, and this was located just a short walk from the river docks. You do need to go down to the lower street level to find it (below Michigan Ave) but that adds to the charm of the place. It looks like a place that's been there for ever, cranking out food for the men and women that built Chicago. We all enjoyed the burgers, perfectly solid, no frills burger. I also had a steak sandwich, which was a little fatty, but had a great taste and I probably liked better than the burger. There's a surprising amount of seating and a big bar to sit around as well. The food is grilled fresh right in front of you while you wait and you add your own toppings. I'm glad we stopped in for something that has a true old world Chicago feel and not over commercialised or turned into a tourist trap.
