I’m in Chicago for work and found this place close by my hotel. I’m SO glad I did - the food is amazing and great quality, the ambience is perfect, and the staff is incredibly helpful. I stayed longer than the average person but the staff didn’t rush me or make me feel unwelcome. I love Chapel Street Cafe and look forward to coming back!
This bar/restaurant is so convenient and has a great outdoor patio. The menu is well marked for dietary needs and Pumpkin hand wrote a celiac safe menu to help customers who are even more sensitive. The fettuccine with gluten free pasta was delicious and so was the key lime pie.
This is an Australian influenced Cafe with a charming story which is printed on the menu. I’m new to the city and ChatGPT suggested this cafe for lunch when I asked for suggestions on a lunch spot with a classic Chicago vibe that locals got to. This is a Cafe and Bakery Bar with inviting items including fresh baked Chicken Pot Pies and Quiche. I sat in the dining room and ordered a “Honey Cardamom Cruffin”, which the server (John L) suggested when I asked to recommend something from the bakery. Very light and tasty, went well with my Americano. The appearance is of a muffinn made out of croissant pastry hence the name “Cruffin”. I ordered a Turkey club for lunch with an up charge of $8 for a side Caesar salad. The sandwich, which was served in grilled sourdough bread, was big and thick with Turkey. The bacon was not the traditional bacon but rather a Canadian style bacon which was delicious. That was a perfect sandwich! Beautiful, constructed with care and plated beautifully. The add-on Caesar Salad was amazing. A true artisan creation. The greens were crisp, the dressing was obviously home made and bursting with flavor. The salad was garnished with half a mid-firm poached egg and two anchovies that were a melt in your mouth delicacy. Sometimes I object to up charges for salads but in this case, that was a a genius decision. I had no idea at all. Worth noting that the server did nothing to promote anything. He seemed aloof and uninterested. He was polite and knowledge, but entirely lacking in customer engagement. Having strong people oriented servers would be a great benefit to this cafe. At one point I asked to use the rest room and was directed out of the cafe into the lobby of the hotel where the cafe is located, then down two flights of stairs to the bathrooms. That’s the furthest I have ever gone to use a bathroom when at a restaurant. Overall the vibe is great. It was very obvious most of the people eating were locals. The menu is small but very inviting. There is very little in the way of beef options on the menu. The dining room is spacious and well organized. Several tables show wear, a testament to the popularity of the venue. There are large windows that make the room bright and cheerful and facilitate people watching of the bustling activity outside. I will definitely return next time I visit Chicago. Highly recommend!
Food was good and most of the service was kind and friendly. But…the thin blond waiter with the bun is full of himself; slapped on 20% gratuity for 2 people and then the screen still asks if you want to add a tip. He said it’s restaurant policy to automatically put 20% gratuity “ to take care of staff” and save time or some such explanation. Basically, you’d have to spend time arguing about it if you felt he deserved less. However, at the bar area they didn’t do that even though while you order at the counter, “their people” still bring out your food.
This is an all around great place! So down to earth and chill atmosphere. Olivia was our server. She was very friendly, great attitude and checked on us at perfect timings. Not too much not too little. I would highly recommend!
