I’ve never had a food experience bring me to tears until tonight. Our server (and everyone else) was top tier. The food was down right incredible. The tartar, the crab rice, the steaks, and the bone marrow potatoes were some of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. I can’t think of a better restaurant experience.
We were really excited to try Asador Bastian, as it was ranked as one of the best steakhouses in North America. But it was very underwhelming. Standouts: The caviar churro, the crab rice, the hazelnut chocolate dessert, the somm who introduced us to a new wine based on what we told her we typically liked. Disappointments: The steak itself! We never saw the steak tray so we were trying to piece together what to order and ended up going with one of the True Galician and then one of the steaks from the daily specials list. The steaks were misidentified when they were brought out to our table and I had to point out that we hadn’t ordered the Japanese dry aged steak, so we don’t know if we even ended up with the right ones that we had ordered. The steak itself was chewy and tough and the flavor did not make up for it. All of these issues could have been a function of our table being in the bar area and there may be better, more consistent service upstairs. Overall, this place was shockingly disappointing and overhyped. Bummer.
The ambiance was excellent and set the tone for a great dining experience. The steak was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and exactly as ordered. The crab rice was spectacular and easily a standout dish. The foie gras lobster bite was incredible; I could have eaten ten of them without hesitation. To finish, the Basque cheesecake was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience even better.
We chose Asador Bastian to celebrate our daughter’s graduation, and it was the perfect place for a special occasion. The atmosphere is elegant, warm, and inviting, creating a memorable dining experience from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious. Every dish was beautifully prepared and packed with flavor, and the quality of the ingredients really stood out. The desserts were equally impressive and the perfect way to end the meal. The combination of outstanding food, a wonderful ambiance, and attentive service made for a fantastic evening. We had a great time celebrating with family and would highly recommend Asador Bastian for any special occasion in Chicago. Some restaurants rely on hype alone; this one actually delivers.
Great food with cozy vibe! We enjoyed Galiciana steak cooked medium rare. The house specialties crab risotto and octopus pasta were both delicious. The roasted assorted vegetables were delivered extremely well, a great company with the steak. The service we received was a bit underwhelming, apparently our waiter gave more attention to the table next to us, which made me a bit jealous. Lol~
