Tips for day tripping around Chicago

If you’re thinking about hopping on a day trip from Chicago, here’s a little advice. Avoid peak traffic times if you’re driving out on a weekend, especially during summer or around major events like Taste of Chicago. Also, packing a small cooler or grabbing snacks before you leave saves time and money since some spots don’t have a lot of options nearby.

One of my favorite unplanned stops is the Chicago Botanic Garden up in Glencoe. It’s free if you hit it on an off-peak weekday, and the walk through the different gardens is a lovely way to reset without leaving the area. Seriously, it’s a local secret that’s easy for a half-day trip if you want to go slow and soak in some green space.

Definitely. Suburbs like Oak Park and Evanston are known for their food scenes , you’ll find cozy bakeries, eclectic restaurants, and local breweries. You don’t even have to plan ahead too much; just stroll around and pick a spot that looks inviting.
If you want flexibility, especially to places like Indiana Dunes or Morton Arboretum, renting a car is better. Public transit covers some spots fine but can be slow or infrequent outside of the city. Also, with a car, you can hit multiple places in one day if you’re ambitious.
Check out the town of Geneva in the Fox River Valley. It has quaint shops, riverside parks, and fewer crowds than the bigger suburbs. It feels like a step back and is pretty easy to drive to.
