Art Deco Chicago Walking Tour – Explore 5 Iconic Skyscraper Lobbies
This 90-minute walking tour in downtown Chicago suits architecture enthusiasts interested in Art Deco buildings and city history.
Description
Explore the lobbies of five lavish Art Deco skyscrapers constructed along the Chicago River during the 1920s business boom. Art Deco arrived in Chicago in the 1920s after gaining fame at the Paris Exposition and was featured at the 1933-1934 Century of Progress Exposition here.
Characterized by motifs such as zigzags, octagons, sunbursts, and floral designs, Art Deco reflects the era’s optimism through geometric shapes and rich materials inspired by Cubism and ancient Middle Eastern art.
Visit landmarks including the Carbide and Carbon Building (now St. Jane Hotel), Chicago Motor Club Building (now Hampton Inn), Trustees System Service Building (Century Tower), and the Engineering Building. The tour concludes at the Merchandise Mart.
Purchasing tickets supports Chicago Architecture Center’s education and community programs like Girls Build!, Teen Fellows, and Open House Chicago.
