The drinks and presentation here are genuinely impressive — the tiki mugs and garnishes are a lot of fun, and the cocktails tasted great. Unfortunately, the experience was let down by how packed and hot the space was on our visit. It was uncomfortably crowded, with barely any airflow, and we asked our server if we could move to a different spot to cool off. She wasn't able to accommodate us, and after a while the heat became too much — we ended up leaving earlier than we'd planned. I'd love to come back and give it a fair shot on a quieter night, but on this visit the environment overshadowed the drinks.
A great underground tiki bar with a full menu inspired by tiki drinks from the best bars around the world. The inside is very dimly interior but the decorations are 10 out of 10. Great vibes but not date or group friendly since it’s very tough to get a table here on the weekends. They should definitely have more seats and tables because of how popular they are!! We got the mystic lamp in a fun ocean waves mug citrusy & tart. Three dots and a dash came in a skull covered tall mug, but it’s less of my style since it’s a blended drink, not shaken. Strawberry jungle bird came on its own stand, which is very fun. This is probably the strongest drink out of the three we ordered. You can definitely taste the strawberry purée and it’s shaking very well with a foamy top as you drink it. Would definitely recommend anybody that’s a fan of tiki drinks to come check this out!! So fun. They also have punch bowls for groups that are massive and very creative too!! Some simple bat bites also available.
I came here after a friend recommended it, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my Chicago trip. I called ahead to ask if I needed a reservation for just one person, and they told me I could simply walk in. I arrived around 8–9 p.m. on a weekday, and from the moment I got there, I understood the hype. The entrance is tucked away in an alley, and after they checked my ID, I walked down the stairs into what felt like a completely different world. It really has that hidden speakeasy vibe. The bar area was packed, but I was lucky enough to grab a seat. Honestly, every cocktail on the menu sounded amazing, so I asked the bartender to help me choose between two drinks. I ended up going with the Jet Pilot, and wow, it was absolutely delicious. I also ordered the waffle fries, which were fresh, crispy, and the perfect snack to go with the cocktails. Between the atmosphere, the drinks, and the friendly service, this was easily one of my favorite experiences in Chicago. I’d absolutely come back the next time I’m in town.
Finding Three Dots and a Dash is half the experience, you walk down a narrow service alley off Hubbard Street, look for a wall of skulls, and head down a staircase that genuinely feels like something out of an adventure movie before the room finally opens up below. Once inside, it's full tropical theater, thatched bar, hanging grass, tiki gods watching over the whole space. We came without a reservation on a Saturday right at open and managed to get seated quickly, though showing up later would've meant a real wait. We started with the Pu Pu Platter, a shareable spread that included coconut shrimp, perfect for snacking on between drinks. The cocktails are really the whole point here though, and we worked through a Zombie, a Painkiller, and the signature Three Dots and a Dash drink itself, each one arriving in its own elaborate vessel, some smoking, some on fire, one served in what looked like a porcelain sea anemone. The bao buns we ordered next held up well against all that rum, soft and a little sweet, a nice contrast to the citrus-heavy cocktails. We also tried a poke bowl, fresh and well-balanced, which surprised us a little in a place so focused on spectacle. Service throughout was sharp, our bartender clearly took pride in the craft, and the whole evening had this fun, theatrical energy that's hard to find anywhere else in the city. If you want a quieter, more intimate version of the same idea, the Bamboo Room next door is worth booking ahead, smaller and more focused on rare rums.
Three Dots and a Dash was a fantastic experience and easily one of the most memorable bars I have visited in Chicago. The atmosphere has an energetic, tropical vibe that feels lively and fun without sacrificing comfort. Being able to make a reservation was a huge plus and made the visit much more convenient. The drinks were creative, strong, and surprisingly approachable, making them enjoyable whether you are a cocktail enthusiast or just looking for something fun to try. The food was also much better than expected and complemented the drinks perfectly. Despite the busy, club like atmosphere, the service was attentive and efficient throughout the evening. Overall, a great spot for drinks, food, and a unique night out, and I will definitely be back.
